Independent, vet-reviewed and evidence-based.

PawNest is a premium pet-care marketplace, but our Journal is editorially independent from our shop. We follow the same standards used by leading veterinary bodies in the US and EU so you can trust what you read.

  • Every guide is fact-checked against peer-reviewed veterinary literature.
  • Health and nutrition articles are reviewed by a licensed DVM before publication.
  • We disclose every affiliate and sponsored relationship — always.
  • Guides are re-checked annually and dated so you know what's current.

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers from the PawNest Journal.

How often should I feed my puppy?+

Puppies under 4 months old typically need 4 meals per day, dropping to 3 meals between 4–6 months and 2 meals from 6 months onward. Always follow the feeding chart on your puppy food and consult your veterinarian for breed-specific guidance.

What human foods are toxic to dogs and cats?+

Chocolate, xylitol, grapes and raisins, onions, garlic, macadamia nuts, alcohol and caffeine are all toxic to both dogs and cats. Cats are additionally sensitive to lilies, raw dough and many essential oils. If your pet ingests any of these, contact your vet or a pet poison helpline immediately.

How often should I bathe my dog?+

For most breeds, once every 4–6 weeks is ideal. Dogs with oily coats may need weekly baths, while dogs with dry skin should be bathed less frequently. Always use a pH-balanced dog shampoo — human products strip their skin barrier.

When should my kitten get vaccinated?+

Core kitten vaccinations start at 6–8 weeks and continue every 3–4 weeks until 16 weeks of age. Boosters are then given at 1 year and every 1–3 years depending on lifestyle and local regulations.

How do I travel internationally with my pet from the EU or US?+

You'll need an ISO-compliant microchip, a rabies vaccination administered at least 21 days before travel, and country-specific health certificates. EU travel requires an EU Pet Passport (issued by a licensed vet); US-outbound travel requires a USDA-endorsed health certificate. Airlines have separate carrier and breed restrictions — always confirm before booking.

Are subscription pet-food boxes worth it?+

Subscription boxes can offer convenience, curated portions and fresher ingredients — but the value depends on your pet's size, dietary needs and your budget. Compare price per kg against your current food and check that the supplier meets AAFCO (US) or FEDIAF (EU) nutritional standards.
